"The Suburbs Called, They Want You Back" I scored 94 points on the TONY "Essential NYC" Quiz! What about you?
I have no idea what the test was "out of" -- but I got a LOT wrong. (and, I am dismayed to know that a strip club only needs to be 500 feet away from a school) But, I did know where Jay-Z was from! And I correctly identified all the buildings and statues and food! And I know why New York has the 212 area code. I'd probably kick-ass on a Philadelphia test....maybe even a Boston test. It's just as well -- I didn't want to really be a New Yorker anyway.....

Perhaps I shouldn't wear my Sox hat around town these days.... http://www.overheardinnewyork.com/archives/006982.html
I work three blocks from the Brewery. Heh.
There is finally sun in NYC again. Of course, since I did nothing productive yesterday, I have to spend today's nice day doing my school work....blah.

why am I interesting? so, I'm auditioning for Jeopardy on Saturday, and I have to include in my little application-thingy a list of 5 interesting things about myself that Alex Trebek could talk to me about. (My cousin had to do the same thing when she tried out for Who Wants to be a Millionaire?)
so far i have: 1) I majored in art history in college and now i teach high school math 2) by accident, i once dyed my hair bright orange
and, yeah, that's about it.
everyone keeps telling me to say things about wellesley, but most of the "interesting" things i wouldn't want to share.....
ideas?
oh, i just had an idea!
I participated in a group project building a chandelier out of free AOL cds!

[Link] | I am safely in Minnesota. I arrived, oh, 19 hours ago.
My luggage is somewhere in United States. ATA refuses to answer their phone or call me back. Someone is looking for a good smackdown.
Luckily, there are a plethora of Targets out here, so I have been able to replenish the essentials.
Execpt, of course, my glasses, my prescription (yes, i KNOW you aren't supposed to check those), my cell-phone charger, my stuffed lamb.
I hate ATA. RAWR.
Edit (11am): ATA just called. They have my luggage. Dena and I will go get it after lunch. I guess I can stop cursing them out now. (Well, I'll wait until I get there and make sure that it is in fact MY luggage.)

Florida, Arizona, or California? So, JetBlue is having a kick-ass sale. And I have two three-day weekends this fall (Columbus Day and Veterans Day). Where should I go? I'm considering Ft. Lauderdale (Hi rbb!), Phoenix, and San Diego.

I am hot... ...because I am in Florida. but, it is fun and rbb is an excellent hostess. We have done much sight-seeing in south Florida (which isn't saying much, because, well, everything looks pretty much the same), including a scenic drive last night through downtown Miami and almost to Coral Gables while looking for South Beach (which was NOT clearly labeled). For those of you who might be confused about how we could get disoriented looking for something since I am the navigator, I would like to take this opportunity to point out that Beth has lived in Florida for more than 4 months and does not yet have a map!
But, yes, Sunday night we went out for tasty Mexican food, yesterday I hung around her apartment and played with Groucho (Lionel does not like me) while she went to work, and then she came home and we embarked on our adventure down A1A. Ended up having dinner at a pseudo-French bistro place in Miami Beach (or was it South Beach, again....not clearly marked), and got home LATE. Today we slept in, got up and went to Flamingo Gardens to look at some wildlife. It should really be called Peacock Gardens, as they are quite prevalent there. Then we had lunch, and went to DQ. Now we are relaxing and napping and playing with kitties before dinner. Tomorrow AM I leave to go to Philadelphia, where I hear it is much colder, yet I only have clothes for 70+ degree weather.
And, just to further my quest to move out west:

Oh, and I've been meaning to mention here -- who remembers Mrs. Fun? Yes, that dreadful duo who opened for the Indigo Girls at Wellesley. Well, last week a friend and I went to see Amy Ray at the Bowery Ballroom. I swear, her opener was almost as bad! Seriously -- it makes me wonder about their taste in music!
Okay, that is all. Will check back in again on Saturday when I am back in NYC.

#2 is the same as last year -- try to post on here more. we'll see how that goes.
so far, 2005 isn't much different than 2004, except that i've been caffeine free since about 5pm on January 1st. this is quite an accomplishment for me. the kids were still on vacation mentally through most of last week....now we're all just gearing up for the end of the semester. can't come soon enough for me.
anyone have any opinion on traveling alone? i'm thinking of taking a little trip in february.....

a holiday meme from lurkerkate For anyone who's the brand of Protestant Christian that follows the four weeks of Advent and their respective representations (Peace, Hope, Love, and Joy), you'll know that this week in Advent represents Joy. For those who aren't that brand, or that faith, just trust me on it that in my church, this week is all about Joy. And the pastor at the church I attend preached a good sermon about accepting joy and embracing joy and generally thinking positive. As part of that, he pointed out how often we end up in a good mood because someone we know and care about had something good happen to them, and they let us know about it. So I came up with the following meme idea:
Post at least three positive things that have happened to you in the past year. I don't care what it is: making a friend, cooking a new dish, finishing a project, getting a job, dumping a boy/girlfriend who was no good for you and moving on in your life. Just name three or more joys from the past year. Your choice whether you reply here or in your own journal.
So, here goes: 1.) NEW JOB -- Finally moving on from Boston/Wellesley and actually working at a job that challenges me everyday (sometimes more than I'd like to be challenged) and gives me a great feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment when things go well. I still don't know if this is the right thing for me forever, but it is definitely the right thing for me for now. It's awesome to wake up in the morning and not have to spend 10 minutes convincing myself to get out of bed and go to a job I hate.
2.) MOVING -- This is kind of the first time I've really felt like I made a big move "on my own." Sure, I didn't move home after college, but my two apartments in Boston were both inhabited by Wellesley people, and now, for the first time, I actually did the craigs-list/apartment-hunting/20-something process and actually moved myself (well, hired someone to move me) to a new city where I really did get to start over.
3.) NEW FRIENDS -- Being in a new city, a new training program, a new job, I've had to really hone my "friend-making" skills. It's been ages since I've had to play the "getting to know you" game, and I'm happy to say that I really think I've made some great new friends in the process. I really like my roommates, I've made some great friends in the Teaching Fellows, and, at work, I feel really lucky to work alongside colleagues who value my opinion and friendship. I've made new "guy friends" for the first time since high school, and I realize just how much I've missed having them. I love that I've made friends in the last six months, yet for some of them it already feels like we've been friends forever.
and, one other one, just because I'm feeling sentimental: 4.) MY MOM -- Anyone who knew me in high school or college would know that my mom and I have not always had the smoothest of relationships. Things got better after I graduated college, and I sort of felt like we were approaching the "friend zone." Now, I really feel like we've reached it. And that makes me happy.

ugh i think i'm getting sick. my throat is all dry and sore and scratchy. and my stomach's been upset since mid-afternoon. and, i think i made myself this way. i was thinking i was probably going to end up getting sick over thanksgiving -- when i've been really busy i usually get sick when i finally take a break -- and i think it just happened sooner rather than later. ugh.
so, yeah, it's been really really busy lately. every weekend has just been taken up with work stuff, for the most part. last week we had to go on this completely time-wasting retreat, and while i like hanging out with (most of) my co-workers, 2.5 hours trapped in a car with the stupid boy is not a great way to spend a friday afternoon.
any ideas on what to get the mom for christmas?

i am sad. i am also angry. and upset. and dissappointed. and pissed off. and mad at all the f-ing people who didn't vote yesterday.
but, mostly i am sad. because i really was hopeful about the next four years, and really the next 20 years and beyond that will be affected by yesterday.
and now i have to go teach and have a discussion with my students about motivation and inspiration and what you need to do well and succeed and prosper. how do you tell them that hard work and dedication and all that sometimes just isn't enough? (okay, so i probably won't actually tell them that)
dave came into the teacher center and saw me at the computer and actually thought i was crying. i wasn't, but i sure feel like i could.
i want to say that i love this country, but right now, i kind of don't.

definitely gives you a lot to think about.
it's been an okay weekend -- yesterday was rather quiet and lazy, which I needed. today I ran errands, got a pedicure, read the paper, the usual. watched the Eagles (barely) maintain their undefeatedness....now watching the Patriots lose hold on theirs.
I have professional development on Tuesday -- and they are telling us we'll be done by 2:30, so I don't think I have to get up and vote at 6 in the morning -- yay!
