I scored 94 points on the TONY "Essential NYC" Quiz! What about you?

I have no idea what the test was "out of" -- but I got a LOT wrong. (and, I am dismayed to know that a strip club only needs to be 500 feet away from a school) But, I did know where Jay-Z was from! And I correctly identified all the buildings and statues and food! And I know why New York has the 212 area code. I'd probably kick-ass on a Philadelphia test....maybe even a Boston test. It's just as well -- I didn't want to really be a New Yorker anyway.....

We have done much sight-seeing in south Florida (which isn't saying much, because, well, everything looks pretty much the same), including a scenic drive last night through downtown Miami and almost to Coral Gables while looking for South Beach (which was NOT clearly labeled). For those of you who might be confused about how we could get disoriented looking for something since I am the navigator, I would like to take this opportunity to point out that Beth has lived in Florida for more than 4 months and does not yet have a map!

But, yes, Sunday night we went out for tasty Mexican food, yesterday I hung around her apartment and played with Groucho (Lionel does not like me) while she went to work, and then she came home and we embarked on our adventure down A1A. Ended up having dinner at a pseudo-French bistro place in Miami Beach (or was it South Beach, again....not clearly marked), and got home LATE. Today we slept in, got up and went to Flamingo Gardens to look at some wildlife. It should really be called Peacock Gardens, as they are quite prevalent there. Then we had lunch, and went to DQ. Now we are relaxing and napping and playing with kitties before dinner. Tomorrow AM I leave to go to Philadelphia, where I hear it is much colder, yet I only have clothes for 70+ degree weather.

And, just to further my quest to move out west:

<lj:music>the humming of the fluorescent lights</lj:music>

For anyone who's the brand of Protestant Christian that follows the four weeks of Advent and their respective representations (Peace, Hope, Love, and Joy), you'll know that this week in Advent represents Joy. For those who aren't that brand, or that faith, just trust me on it that in my church, this week is all about Joy. And the pastor at the church I attend preached a good sermon about accepting joy and embracing joy and generally thinking positive. As part of that, he pointed out how often we end up in a good mood because someone we know and care about had something good happen to them, and they let us know about it. So I came up with the following meme idea:

Post at least three positive things that have happened to you in the past year. I don't care what it is: making a friend, cooking a new dish, finishing a project, getting a job, dumping a boy/girlfriend who was no good for you and moving on in your life. Just name three or more joys from the past year. Your choice whether you reply here or in your own journal.

So, here goes:
1.) NEW JOB -- Finally moving on from Boston/Wellesley and actually working at a job that challenges me everyday (sometimes more than I'd like to be challenged) and gives me a great feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment when things go well. I still don't know if this is the right thing for me forever, but it is definitely the right thing for me for now. It's awesome to wake up in the morning and not have to spend 10 minutes convincing myself to get out of bed and go to a job I hate.

2.) MOVING -- This is kind of the first time I've really felt like I made a big move "on my own." Sure, I didn't move home after college, but my two apartments in Boston were both inhabited by Wellesley people, and now, for the first time, I actually did the craigs-list/apartment-hunting/20-something process and actually moved myself (well, hired someone to move me) to a new city where I really did get to start over.

3.) NEW FRIENDS -- Being in a new city, a new training program, a new job, I've had to really hone my "friend-making" skills. It's been ages since I've had to play the "getting to know you" game, and I'm happy to say that I really think I've made some great new friends in the process. I really like my roommates, I've made some great friends in the Teaching Fellows, and, at work, I feel really lucky to work alongside colleagues who value my opinion and friendship. I've made new "guy friends" for the first time since high school, and I realize just how much I've missed having them. I love that I've made friends in the last six months, yet for some of them it already feels like we've been friends forever.

and, one other one, just because I'm feeling sentimental:
4.) MY MOM -- Anyone who knew me in high school or college would know that my mom and I have not always had the smoothest of relationships. Things got better after I graduated college, and I sort of felt like we were approaching the "friend zone." Now, I really feel like we've reached it. And that makes me happy.

this is easily one of the best pieces of Friedman's I've ever read:

The Apparent Heir

definitely gives you a lot to think about.

it's been an okay weekend -- yesterday was rather quiet and lazy, which I needed. today I ran errands, got a pedicure, read the paper, the usual. watched the Eagles (barely) maintain their undefeatedness....now watching the Patriots lose hold on theirs.

I have professional development on Tuesday -- and they are telling us we'll be done by 2:30, so I don't think I have to get up and vote at 6 in the morning -- yay!

which, in actuality, is a good thing, right? But, the protest was fun. I wore my wellesley "unite" shirt, and my wellesley hat with the W on it. I hesitated a bit with the hat, for fear that people would think I was a bushie, but I decided he doesn't own the damn letter. There were SO many people. I went with Rachel and Tiffany from my teaching fellows class and we did lots of walking (to go along with all the walking we did at 6 Flags on Friday). Some of my favorite signs: "Support a Soldier: Vote Kerry", "Dykes against Bush", and the guy in front of me who had written on his shirt "Dear Grandma, Please don't vote for George Bush, Love, your favorite grandson", and lots of other ones I can't remember now. rbb, for awhile I was next to "Librarians Against Bush" ("first amendment freaks since 1948") and I thought of you. When I got home, I turned on C-SPAN and there were STILL people streaming past MSG. (an aside, when I see Madison Square Garden abbrieviated that way, I always think it's monosodiumglutimate.) I've never really done the march/rally/protest thing before, so, yay for me.

Tomorrow I have a big faculty meeting that will probably run all day. Last week I wasn't in my summer school placement because I was at a design institute with my high school (for the fall), but I was back in 7th grade today. I don't call them "the little devils" for nothing. however, the students are only made worse by the teacher I am working with -- today he actually LAUGHED (along with the other students) at a student who gave the wrong answer (who I think is probably special ed or LD or something). seriously, could that be any more wrong??? on the other hand, classes are going pretty well -- I'm still really happy with my classmates for the most part. my FA drives me crazy more often than not, but at least it's only 2 hours a day -- it's just frustrating to end the day on such a negative note. I hate coming home so defeated every day.

This past weekend in Boston was fun -- it was great to be able to say goodbye to Laura before she flees to the desert. Got to see Abby (the old roommate) and Janie and Chris, up from DC. Got my haircut, and a pedicure. Oh, and went shopping at the Pru. I do miss Boston sometimes, but I think I'm glad I don't live there anymore.

Mom is coming next Sunday to visit for the day, and I'm hoping to have some other visitors in August -- it's amazing how many of my friends have never really spent time in New York, some of whom have never been here at all.

I'm really really excited about it.

Classes are going well, although I am completely exhausted when I get home at night. I seriously don't do much other than eat, sleep, shower, and go to class.
So, I got a job offer tonight. It's from one of the schools that I interviewed at a couple weeks ago -- my third choice of the 3, but certainly not somewhere I would be unhappy at (I think -- I mean, I really don't know that much about any of these places). I have three more interviews later this week -- two on Thursday and one on Friday -- what to do? I'm hesitant to just accept the first place that offers me a job, especially since I'm really interested in the school I have the interview with on Thursday morning, but I'm not sure what kind of time frame I have to let this guy know (although, tonight's email is the first contact I've had from him since I visited the school back on June 3rd). If I do accept now, I have a really good chance of getting placed for summer school in this school, rather than just some random place.....blah.

In other news, I'm still sick, but better than I was last night, and this morning (when I skipped class to get 4 more hours of sleep). And, it is hot. I don't know how I'm going to handle summer in the city.....
